The Mafia Rules - Ethics

A brief summary of Mafia for those interested in applying:

Mafia was founded in Ultima Online over 8 years ago by a group of friends @ Mater Dei High School.  The guild became notorious for being one of the most dominant pvp/pk guild on the Pacific shard.  8 years later, most of this original group of friends still remain in contact.  One of the group was hired by Blizzard and still works there at the current time.  Mafia was formed once again during WoW’s Alpha phase.  The guild quickly established itself as a formidable PvP force during WoW’s CB phase.  Entering retail, the guild, once numbering only 15-20, evolved into a end game raiding guild.

Although Mafia has grown quite considerably, we strive to maintain the small guild feel.  All members are encouraged to participate with each other for all events.  Members often assist each other with whatever is needed and rarely participate with outside guilds.  We strive for guild solidarity.  Our activities are not only limited to WoW, as many members often participate in the social events held every few months.  Socializing is probably the most important aspect of the application phase for a trial member.  Those who prefer to play by themselves or refrain from participating with fellow guild members are quickly removed.   We have removed members in the past who have desired to participate with others outside the guild over their own members.  If you have friends with whom you’ll be hanging out with more often than your own prospective guild members, then please don’t waste y(our) time by applying.

Mafia is quite diverse on many fronts.  We have quite a few female gamers, are composed of many different ethnicities, and tolerate those of all types of sexual orientation.    Most of our guild members are 21+ with over 75% of the guild being 25 years or older.  We’re all kids at heart since we play WoW, but we believe in fostering a mature gaming atmosphere.  Those who exhibit poor attitudes or immature behavior will be removed.   This includes making racist, assphobic, sexist remarks, forum trolling, ninja looting, exploiting, l33t sp3ak, and spamming.

Mafia has gone a long way in establishing itself as a successful guild on Frostwolf.  We were one of the 4 original guilds to kill a Pre Nerfed Magmadar (along with SotH, SP, HT).  We were also the 3rd horde guild to down Onyxia (behind Soth & SP).  Mafia was the 3rd horde guild to down Ragnaros.  We’re also the 3rd horde guild to down Razergore in addition to being the 3rd horde guild to slay Nefarian.  We’ve had a few server first kills and are currently one of the 3 top tier raiding guilds on Horde.  Mafia’s success stems from collaborative effort and the individual sacrifices of all of its members.  Skill can be taught, attitude and temperment cannot.  Those who wish to join must demonstrate their abilities to accept constructive criticism and apply it to make themselves better.  We don’t care if you are the best at your class if your attitude is piss poor.  Inexperienced players with great attitudes make better guildmates (and raiders) than those with poor attitudes who think they know better.

Mafia does not use a DKP system for raid drop allocation.  We put an emphasis on not emphasizing the importance of receiving drops.  Receiving a raid drop is a bonus and not an end to raiding.  Those who wish to raid to receive drops are asked to apply to other guilds who employ a DKP system.  There is no gaurantee on ever receiving a drop.  Mafia uses an officer decision/class council/priorities system when allocating raid drops.  Members can go weeks or even months without ever receiving a drop.  Applicants and even members who whine/beg/campaign for drops will be removed immediately.  We have recently began to quickly purge membership of those who exhibit such behavior.

Mafia currently has a comfortable amount of active members.  We are not looking to recruit a massive amount of players like other guilds.  We have a very low turn over rate compared to other guilds on the server.  I believe this speaks volumes on the quality of the guild.  Although we may be full for the most part, exceptions are made for exceptional players with exceptional attitudes and qualities.  Mafia will not sacrifice any of its ideals for any one person.  In the end, the question you should ask yourself and answer is “What can I bring to Mafia and why should we accept you?”.

Mafia’s Code of Conduct and Policies:

  1. To help guildies in need, even without anything in it for yourself, without the desire for recognition.
  2. To provide an enjoyable gaming experience to your fellow guild members. It helps no one if you’re always pessimistic or complaining at every moment about some aspect of the game. There’s no room in Mafia for those who promote racism, sexism, or are intollerent of someones sexual orientation (these include, but are not limited to, offensive terms such as racial slurs, sexist comments, or using terms negatively referring to sexual orientation ). Members have been booted without warning in the past due to blatant offensive remarks, though in most cases you will be warned. We have ethnicities of all types from all around the world and we would like to provide an appropriate atmosphere for all of us to enjoy.
  3. To put a priority on achieving guild goals and success over individual needs. Quite often one class will feel as if they can use an item. But some items are obviously more suited for another class. Our goal as a guild is to achieve the goals set forth by the council. If that means putting a priority on certain classes for certain items, all Mafia members need to be open minded enough to accept it. The loot whore mentality will not be tolerated. Talking about loot or whining about loot is looked down upon and disciplinary actions will be taken.
  4. Do not sell items or materials that other guild members can use. There is an in depth “DO NOT SELL” list in the Request forum. All greens are to be sent to an enchanter for disenchant. No epics or blues are to be sold unless offered to the guild first. Our guild is a family. We share everything. Most other guilds have tried a similar system, but have failed miserably. But due to the conscientious effort of each Mafia member, everyone’s bought into this community sharing concept. Members or recruits found to be selling such items will be reprimanded and in some cases asked to leave the guild.
  5. Limit spam and unneccessary remarks on ventrilo. Although we’re a mature crowd, repetitive cursing is looked down upon. Please refrain from using the words, such as “G-a-y”, “J-e-w”‘, etc, in a negative sense. Please don’t use excessive l33t sp3ak as it is annoying to hear “omgwtfbbq” “pwnt” “uber dps” all day long. We also ask that the finger pointing and whining be excluded from voice chat.

General Forum Guidelines

- DO NOT troll or start e-flame wars on our Frostwolf Server Forums nor other community forums.
- Follow the same Guidelines as stated for Ventrillo.

Raid Guidelines

On ventrilo, the only people to be speaking at ALL times are the raid leader, officers, and the main tanks during a Boss Encounter. If you have a suggestion for a given encounter, please contribute before the encounter begins. Ventrilo spam needs to be cut down to a minimum. I trust we’re all mature enough to understand the reason why ventrilo chat needs to be kept clear. No one wants to listen to unncessary spam, where orders and information could possibly be lost in the confusion.

Also, all requests for buffs or water, are to be kept to tells or to ‘/say’ chat. Raid chat is to be kept clear. Normal conversations can be held on guild chat, but raid chat needs to be kept clear for important announcements/instructions/observations only. Everyone can use raid chat, but please do so in a tactful manner and only when necessary.

In Regards To Exploits

No Mafia member is to be take part in exploiting buggy game mechanics. Examples include the weapon switching backstab/ambush macro as well as the Shaman agilty bug. Those found exploiting in such a manner will be dealt with in a severe manner, including possible expulsion from the guild.

No Mafia member is to swap account information with anyone else outside of Mafia. Guild chat is a privilege. Any member caught doing so will be removed from the guild.

No Mafia member is to discuss guild issues/tactics with non guild members. Our dirty laundry, stay’s our dirty laundry. The tactics we’ve come to use have been the result of pain staking research, modification, and trial n error.

Failure to comply with these new rules will result in severe disciplinary actions.

Some In-game “No-No’s”

“I’m writing you this letter for one simple reason, I don’t like to get slapped in the face over and over. I know people are busy and often times do not have time to help others, but could people at least have the decney to respond to me? Today I logged on at 10:30 pm, I knew it was late yet I thought I would still try to get people to run brd cause the majority of my quests are for there. I really wasn’t expecting it to fly, but I though what the heck, and tried hoping I’d be wrong. After doing a few things, I asked the first time at 11:30, and waited. After no one responeded I thought maybe everyone was just busy and they couldn’t tell me no cause something was happening and they couldn’t see what I had written, so I asked again. Only one person responeded who was in DM at the time but said he would help me after if there was time, but not 30 seconds after I had written, Someone else asked if anyone would help with the dragon. Imagine my surprise when several people quickly responded that they could help. I don’t expect help, but I would at least like to know that people actually cared enough about others to say No it’s 11:30 at night it’s too late to run. There were more than 5 people sitting in Orgimmar, and they had been their the entire hour since I had logged on at 10:30. It does not matter to me if I get help from the guild, most of the time I ask without expecting any becuase it hasn’t been very often that I’ve managed to get people to help me. There’s a long standing joke between myself and friend that we don’t get to matter untill were 60, tonight was the first night that I actually felt it was true.”

There’s something wrong with a guild if someone can’t even get a response of “No, it’s late.” or “Nah, I just want to chill right now” or “Sorry that place sucks so bad I never want to go back there”. Our fellow guild members deserve a response.

Remember that we are all here to have fun in a mature, respectful atmosphere.
